BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers)

The Better Opportunities for Single Service Members (BOSS) program represents the voice of the single service member. If you're a single Service member, BOSS members advocate for you by advancing quality of life issues on the installation, and in the barracks, to senior leaders on post and throughout the Army.  "Let Your Voice Be Heard"

The Three Pillars of BOSS

I. Leisure and Recreation

This pillar focuses on meeting Soldiers’ leisure and recreational needs. As such, suggestions and ideas are solicited from the single Soldiers' representatives of Fort Drum at our monthly meetings. These events are coordinated with BOSS, the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Outdoor Recreation, and many outside organizations. Leisure and Recreational activities are designed to provide alternative, opportunities on/ off post for Soldiers to get out of the barracks.

II. Community Service

BOSS helps to promote Soldiers' participation in many community service activities at Fort Drum and in the surrounding communities. It provides a Soldier the chance to meet new people and grow as individuals. Soldiers are exposed to new people, ideas and learn new skills. Volunteering is good as it gives Soldiers a sense of involvement and achievement, beyond their day to day activities.

III. Quality of Life

This third pillar of BOSS targets enhancing single Soldiers’ morale, living environment, and personal growth and development. Depending on the issue at hand, it will be handled by the Soldiers’ chain of command. However, the yearly Fort Drum BOSS Conference has developed sessions where Soldier issues can be brought forward and solved. The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) plays an important role in the betterment of the quality of life for Army personnel. Issues and ideas are always accepted and reviewed through the Army Community Service AFAP program. To submit an issue fill out DA Form 7380 and turn in to one of the BOSS facilities.

BOSS Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can participate in BOSS events?

Any single or unaccompanied Service Member. The single or unaccompanied Service Member category includes single Service Members, Unaccompanied Soldiers, and Single Parents.

2. How can I sign up for an event?

Registration instructions are always listed at the bottom of the BOSS event advertisements. Contact your unit BOSS Representative or the BOSS President at the Fort Sill BOSS office for additional registration guidance.

3. How can I sign up to volunteer?

We recommend you register directly with Army OneSource’s Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS), the Army’s volunteer hour tracking system managed through Army Community Service (ACS). By registering with VMIS, volunteers are able to manage their own volunteer hours and approved hours will be recognized throughout your Army career as officially completed hours. Contact ACS, your unit BOSS representative or the BOSS President at the Fort Sill BOSS office for a VMIS registration instruction packet.

4. How can I become a BOSS representative?

BOSS representatives are the voice of the single service member. BOSS reps are expected to attend meetings, volunteer at least once a month, and be dedicated to the BOSS mission of representing single Service Members. To become a BOSS representative, interested candidates must complete a Representative Appointment Memo and have it signed by their Commander. Contact the Fort Sill BOSS President to request the BOSS Representative Appointment Memo. Please know that all are welcome to attend BOSS meetings and functions even if they are not an official BOSS Rep.

5. Can I get credit for my BOSS volunteer service?

Anyone who wishes to attend a BOSS meeting is always welcome.

7. How can I find out who is the BOSS program manager at my installation?
